Lucasfilm has announced that the inaugural 1977 Star Wars film will make its debut on IMAX 70mm as part of the franchise’s 50th-anniversary celebrations. The event is scheduled for February 19, 2027. Later that year, the newest installment, Star Wars: Starfighter, will also arrive in this premium format on May 28, 2027, marking exactly 50 years after the original movie’s initial weekend release.
Regarding the presentation of the classic film, Lucasfilm confirmed that screenings will utilize a newly restored version of the original theatrical cut rather than the digitally remastered editions released in later years. While details on the restoration process were not fully disclosed, the announcement addresses long-standing fan desire to view the movie in its unadulterated form, free from added scenes or visual effects modifications.
The original cut of Star Wars has been officially screened only twice since the 1997 Special Edition release, with the most recent occurrence at a UK film festival last year. Audience members can expect the film to be projected on massive 59-by-79-foot IMAX screens accompanied by John Williams’ score in 12-channel surround sound.
In contrast, Star Wars: Starfighter was shot digitally using Sony CineAlta Venice 2 cameras, delivering an 8.6K source and 4K master. Tom Cruise reportedly utilized these cameras during production, including for lightsaber duel sequences. Because IMAX 70mm film can exceed 14K resolution, the digital feature will require upscaling and conversion. Despite the technical adjustments, this format remains the premier method for experiencing the new film.
