Monty Don, the longest-serving head gardener in the history of the BBC’s Gardeners’ World, has announced he will step down at the conclusion of the current series.
Don, who has hosted the programme from his Herefordshire garden since 2011, described the presenter as “utterly unique.” Speaking about his decision, he stated that it felt “the right time for a change” after 23 years leading the show.
The final series hosted by Don will continue to air later this year. Despite leaving the flagship gardening programme, he confirmed he will maintain his relationship with the BBC by working on other television projects and continuing his independent endeavors, which include writing books.
He’ll surely thrive elsewhere. His books are wonderful. Sad to see him go, but good for him.
Twenty-three years is a long run. I wonder if the show’s ratings have dipped? Change might be needed.
I can’t imagine my evenings without Monty. He brings such calm to the screen. What will replace him?
