Cornwall Council has announced a stringent new enforcement campaign targeting individuals who illegally dispose of waste, with penalties reaching up to £5,000 for those caught. The move comes in response to a significant surge in fly-tipping, with the local authority recording 17,500 incidents over the past five years.
To deter offenders, the council is utilizing covert surveillance cameras designed to catch unlicensed waste carriers in the act of dumping. Authorities are also urging residents to report any suspicious activity or provide video evidence they may have captured, emphasizing community involvement in the crackdown.
The regulatory measures extend beyond the primary dumpers; households that hire illegal waste carriers and facilitate fly-tipping are also subject to financial penalties. Council officials stated there is no justification for the crime and pledged to hold all parties responsible accountable.
Sarah-Jane Brown, group leader for community protection at Cornwall Council, highlighted the efforts to trace offenders. “We work hard to identify those responsible for illegal dumping and will hold offenders to account wherever possible,” she said. She further encouraged the public to collaborate with the council by sharing any information that could aid investigations.
Councillor Thalia Marrington, who oversees community safety and public protection, warned that fly-tipping inflicts severe damage on local communities, wildlife, and the natural environment. She noted that the financial burden of cleanup operations places a heavy strain on both councils and private landowners.
Where exactly are these covert cameras being placed? I hope they aren’t invading privacy in residential areas unfairly.
Hiring illegal carriers is common to save money. Good that households are now liable too; needs to stop the demand.
This is crucial for protecting our wildlife. The cleanup costs are draining our resources and harming nature badly.
Five grand is steep. Does the council really have the manpower to catch everyone, or will these just be fines on paper?
Finally some action! My garden border was dumped on last year. Hopefully the cameras actually work this time.
