Vatican Confirms Pope Leo Diagnosed with Lung Cancer Following Surgery

The Vatican revealed on Tuesday that Pope Leo XIV has received a lung cancer diagnosis following an operation to remove a section of his lung. Medical officials confirmed the pontiff was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma after the lower lobe of his right lung was excised during the procedure.

In a medical bulletin released following the surgery, the Vatican stated that preoperative tests had raised suspicions of a diagnosis, which was then confirmed once the surgery began. The 71-year-old pope spent roughly three hours in the operating room, with the surgical intervention itself lasting approximately 90 minutes.

“The surgery was successful, and there were no complications,” the statement reported regarding the outcome of the procedure. The announcement marks the latest development in the health update of the first American pope, who recently underwent hospitalization for the removal of a lung nodule.

  1. Thank goodness for modern medicine. Three hours in surgery and no complications is a good outcome indeed.

  2. I didn’t know lung cancer could develop from just a nodule without prior warning signs. That’s scary.
