At least 10 individuals have died and another 64 were injured following a massive explosion of pyrotechnic material during a religious festival in central Mexico, authorities reported.
The incident occurred Saturday night in Temascalcingo, a municipality in the State of Mexico with approximately 66,000 residents. The blast took place next to the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church, where hundreds of attendees had gathered to watch a fireworks display as part of the patron saint celebration.
Mexican officials stated that the force of the explosion collapsed a wall at the site. Temascalcingo is located roughly 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of Mexico City.
The state attorney general’s office has launched an investigation, though the cause of the detonation remains undetermined. A local bishop confirmed that two priests are among the injured.
Social media footage from the scene showed dozens of people navigating through smoke and debris in search of survivors.
Pyrotechnic accidents are a recurring tragedy in Mexico, where fireworks are deeply embedded in street celebrations and religious festivals. In a similar incident nearly four years ago in the municipality of Huejutla in the central state of Hidalgo, a powerful fireworks explosion left 17 people injured.
