Artists have taken to social media platforms to voice frustration after discovering that DistroKid has removed their tracks without prior warning. The distributor has now confirmed to The Verge that these removals are a direct response to legal claims filed by Universal Music Group (UMG).
In September, UMG initiated a lawsuit alleging that DistroKid facilitates an “AI-slop pipeline,” referring to the mass upload of low-effort or automated content. However, several musicians report that their original, non-AI-generated works have been caught in the purge.
Among those affected is musician McGwire, who identifies himself as “Video Game boy.” He reported that six of his songs were taken down from streaming services. Like other affected artists, McGwire stated that there was no communication from DistroKid before or after the removals occurred.
