“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” Holds No. 1 Spot, Eyes Domestic Box Office Record in Sixth Weekend

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” secured its sixth consecutive weekend at the number one position, demonstrating exceptional longevity in a marketplace with scarce competition. The film earned an estimated $18 million during the traditional Friday-to-Sunday window, with projections suggesting it will gross approximately $23 million when including the Labor Day holiday Monday.

The extended reign places “Brand New Day” as the top film since “Avatar: The Way of Water” held the lead for seven weekends in 2022. With domestic receipts now totaling $923 million, the superhero sequel is positioned to soon surpass “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936 million) to become the highest-grossing film in North American box office history, excluding inflation adjustments.

Globally, the Tom Holland-led Sony adaptation has accumulated $2.4 billion, ranking as the third-largest release of all time behind “Avatar” and “Avengers: Endgame,” while outperforming “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The film’s success contributed to a robust summer season, with domestic ticket sales between May and early September reaching $4.7 billion according to Rentrak. This figure represents the second-highest summer on record, trailing only the 2013 benchmark of $4.755 billion.

Industry observers noted the significance of the period. Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak stated that the season could mark a turning point for theaters, reminding audiences of the unique appeal of cinema. The strong performance was driven by major blockbusters such as “The Odyssey,” “Toy Story 5,” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” alongside indie hits like “Obsession” and “Backrooms,” which helped offset financial losses from high-profile failures including Disney’s live-action “Moana” and Warner Bros.’ “Supergirl.”

Despite the overall seasonal strength, the holiday weekend concluded with lackluster offerings for new releases. David A. Gross, publisher of FranchiseRe, described the September box office as traditionally sluggish, noting the absence of recent comparable downturns.

Paramount’s “By Any Means,” an R-rated crime thriller directed by Elegance Bratton, debuted at fourth place with $7 million over the weekend. Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg, the film received a “B+” CinemaScore grade despite a 52% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is projected to earn $9 million through the four-day holiday frame.

Lionsgate’s horror sequel “Fall 2: Deadpoint” opened at number 12, grossing $2.3 million from 1,704 venues. The film, which follows characters trapped 4,000 feet in the air in Thailand, saw ticket sales similar to its 2022 predecessor. Meanwhile, A24’s “Onslaught” languished at 13th with $2 million, receiving poor reviews from both critics and audiences, including a “C” CinemaScore and 54% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” maintained its stronghold at second place in its eighth weekend, adding $13 million domestically and an estimated $17 million for the holiday period. The epic has now grossed $588 million in North America and $1.56 billion worldwide.

In third place, “Coyote vs. Acme” showed remarkable resilience with only a 27% drop from its opening, earning $11.3 million. The Looney Tunes spinoff, which had been shopped around after Warner Bros. originally shelve it, has reached $37 million domestically following positive reception.

Looking ahead, studios are counting on fall releases such as “Practical Magic 2,” Tom Cruise’s “Digger,” and adaptations of “Verity” and “Resident Evil” to maintain momentum. With major tentpoles like “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Dune: Part Three” slated for the holiday season, analysts project North American revenues could exceed $10 billion for the first time since the onset of the pandemic.
