Michelle Yeoh Defers Directing Dreams, Discusses ‘Blade Runner 2099’ and Asian Cinema at Busan

Michelle Yeoh turned her focus to the upcoming Prime Video series “Blade Runner 2099” during a press conference at the Busan International Film Festival on Wednesday, just days before she heads to New York Comic Con for further promotion.

“To be given an opportunity to take it to 2099 is indeed an amazing journey, and to work with such a great talent like Hunter Schafer is a great joy,” Yeoh said. She also praised showrunner Silka Luisa, along with Alcon and Ridley Scott, for welcoming her into the world of replicants and humans. The eight-episode limited series is set to premiere on November 25, with Yeoh portraying Olwen, a replicant Blade Runner nearing the end of her life who partners with Schafer’s character, Cora.

When asked if she might move behind the camera, Yeoh ruled out directing. “I love being an actor; I actually love being a producer, but I think being an amazing, great director, you have no life,” she explained. “There is so much of your vision of that person, that writer, and I think I am not able to rise to that. So I will stick to what I know a little bit better, and hope to support directors who have that vision.”
