Opposition Protests Cast Shadow Over Modi’s 25-Year Governance Milestone

Delhi police have significantly reinforced security measures across the national capital, anticipating further demonstrations by opposition figures regarding allegations of electoral irregularities. These protests threaten to eclipse a major milestone for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is celebrating his 25th anniversary in government.

On Wednesday, authorities deployed barricades and enforced prohibitory orders that ban public assemblies, sloganeering, and speeches. The heightened alert follows a tense encounter yesterday when opposition leaders, including prominent Congress party figure Rahul Gandhi, marched on the Election Commission of India. Gandhi and his sister, lawmaker Priyanka Vadra, were among several detainees released after the sit-in.

Gandhi has accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s office of colluding to manipulate voter lists during a controversial revision exercise, vowing a political reckoning for those he terms “traitors.” On Wednesday morning, Gandhi stated the protest was solely intended to confront election commissioners about stolen votes.

Meanwhile, the ruling BJP launched a celebratory campaign titled ‘Seva Sankalp,’ meaning a “pledge to serve,” marking the anniversary of Modi’s first swearing-in as Gujarat’s chief minister on October 7, 2001. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh praised the Prime Minister’s quarter-century tenure as a testament to dedication and strong governance, a sentiment echoed by fellow party members.

Celebrations included a 2,000-kilometer bike rally undertaken by 40 party workers traveling from Tirupati in the south to Varanasi in the north. Several BJP-ruled states are also hosting public gatherings with telecasts of speeches by Modi and party president Nitin Nabin.

Critics have drawn parallels between these festivities and previous controversies regarding Modi’s birthday celebrations, arguing that massive expenditures on public relations and events contradict government advice for citizens to practice austerity amidst global economic instability.

  1. The bike rally covering 2,000 km is quite the spectacle! But are we spending too much during tough economic times?

  2. Fascinating how one narrative dominates while the other gets silenced. Democracy thrives on debate, not barricades.

  3. A 25-year milestone should focus on service, not just fanfare. The austerity message seems lost on the celebrants.

  4. Security crackdown vs protest is getting intense. Hope the Election Commission addresses the voter list concerns properly.
