Dawood Safi, 28, has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after admitting to the manslaughter of Wayne Broadhurst, a 49-year-old dog walker, in Uxbridge.
The court accepted a guilty plea for the killing, which occurred during a violent incident on 27 October of the previous year. Safi, who was experiencing paranoid delusions and auditory hallucinations, launched a series of knife attacks that began at his home before moving to the street.
According to reports, Safi attacked his landlord, Shahzad Farrukh, shortly before fatally stabbing Mr. Broadhurst. The attack also resulted in injuries to a 14-year-old boy.
Safi remains facing trial for the attempted murder of his landlord and the teenage victim, as he was not found fit to plead on those specific charges. The case has drawn attention to the intersection of mental health crises and criminal liability in west London.
A knife attack leaving a teenager injured is horrifying. Justice needs to be served here.
I’m surprised this wasn’t treated as attempted murder given the severity of the attacks.
How does an indefinite hospital order actually work in practice? Does he ever get out?
Tragic situation for everyone involved. The mental health system clearly failed them both.
