Authorities in Nepal and China confirmed on Thursday that the death toll from recent devastating floods in the Himalayan region has climbed to 5,624. The catastrophic weather event has left roughly 900 construction workers still missing or trapped inside tunnels across six separate hydropower projects.
Among those affected is a Nepalese laborer who recently shared a chilling account of his escape from a flooded tunnel at a hydropower site. Describing the harrowing ordeal, he recounted having to fight through pitch-black conditions and rising water to survive the disaster that struck last week.
The ongoing rescue operations face significant challenges as emergency teams work to locate the hundreds of personnel still unaccounted for in the submerged infrastructure.
