Ugandan Asylum Seeker Finds Hope Through Filmmaking in Japan

For over 15 years, a Ugandan national known as Sunday has existed in legal uncertainty within Japan. His journey began with detention at the Shinagawa immigration center, and he currently faces an unstable existence where he must regularly check in with authorities while depending on charitable organizations to feed his children.

The situation has been exacerbated by recent modifications to Japan’s immigration regulations, which have placed Sunday at risk of deportation. Rather than accepting a fate reduced to mere statistics, Sunday has channeled his energy into an ambitious creative endeavor: directing a samurai film rooted in the legacy of Yasuke, historically recognized as Japan’s first Black samurai.

This cinematic project serves as a profound statement of survival and dignity for Sunday. The story is captured in the documentary titled “Sunday in Japan,” created by filmmakers Antonio Rui Ribeiro, Leo Nelki, and Golriz Kolahi.
