British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated that UK authorities believe Iran played a role in the incident at RAF Fairford that led to the arrest of five men over the weekend. Speaking to the BBC, Burnham acknowledged “strong indications” of Iranian involvement but declined to provide specific details regarding the evidence.
The five suspects, all UK nationals aged between 23 and 25, were detained in the early hours of Sunday morning in the village of Whelford, located east of the airbase. They have since been released on bail, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from US President Donald Trump.
During a visit to the White House on Monday, Trump expressed surprise at the decision to grant bail. “I would have said, ‘don’t let them have bail,'” Trump said. “I wouldn’t have done that.” Burnham pushed back against the criticism, insisting the men are under the “strictest possible bail conditions” and remain under close security control.
Iranian officials quickly dismissed the allegations. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the BBC that the UK leader was “barking up the wrong tree.” In a social media post, Araghchi remarked, “I can confirm Iran’s belief that releasing supposed terrorists working for foreign states really says it all.” The Iranian embassy in London had previously rejected what it called “unfounded and malicious speculations” linking Tehran to the incident.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also weighed in, telling Fox News that the events at RAF Fairford highlight the threats posed by actors such as Iran. “We are dealing with elements in the world… who have openly threatened to attack American interests globally,” Rubio said.
Investigations into the three suspicious vehicles found near the base revealed quantities of petrol, but no explosive devices were discovered. Police described the decision to release the suspects on bail as a strategic investigative choice. It was also revealed that one of the men had called emergency services himself prior to his arrest.
RAF Fairford has long served as a forward operating location for the US Air Force. Recently, the base has been used for US bomber takeoffs targeting the Middle East, following UK approval for defensive strikes against Iran. In July, Iran warned that any base used for aggression against its territory would be considered a legitimate target.
Burnham confirmed that the UK government has been in constant contact with American counterparts throughout the week to explain the handling of the case. “We have complete confidence in the way British security services are handling this,” he said, adding that more information would be provided as the complex investigation progresses.
