Trump Announces South Korean Investment in Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that South Korea will invest in a major project to export natural gas from Alaska, marking the second time in three days the president has highlighted foreign investments in states with competitive Republican Senate races.

The initiative centers on an 807-mile pipeline that would connect the petroleum-rich North Slope of Alaska to a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal in the south. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated during the Oval Office event that the LNG could subsequently be shipped to Asian markets.

The project has been a long-standing priority for Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, who is currently facing a tough reelection bid. Trump credited Sullivan during the ceremony, saying, “He’s got my ear, and he’s had my ear for a long time on Alaska.” Sullivan responded by calling the development “huge for Alaska” and asserting that “the sky is the limit” once the project is completed.

Officials estimate that construction of the pipeline would take three years, with LNG exports beginning two years after that, contingent upon full financing. However, it remains unclear how quickly the South Korean government will approve the deal or the specific amount it intends to commit.

This announcement is part of a larger package of nearly $200 billion in South Korean funding that Trump said includes a power plant in Texas and eight large-scale nuclear facilities. The investment stems from a 2025 trade agreement in which South Korea pledged $350 billion in U.S. investments in exchange for reduced American tariffs on South Korean automobiles and auto parts. Trump attributed the deal to his tariff strategy, noting, “Our trade agreement with South Korea, they have to invest hundreds of billions of dollars.”

The push to showcase economic wins comes as Trump’s approval ratings have dipped to near-historic lows ahead of the midterm elections. Republicans are historically vulnerable during midterms, and even Trump has acknowledged the potential challenge of retaining Congress, suggesting the issue is not a lack of achievements but rather poor communication on his part.

“I’ve done a very bad job of explaining,” Trump admitted during a prior event in the East Room. He promised to address this by spending the next 30 days campaigning on the road, starting with visits to traditionally Republican strongholds such as Texas, Alabama, Ohio, and Nebraska.

The Alaska announcement follows a similar Oval Office event on Monday, where Trump revealed plans for a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa. That project, to be built by a company owned by an Indian industrial conglomerate, benefits Iowa Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson, who is in a tight Senate race against Democrat Josh Turek. Both Alaska and Iowa are key battlegrounds where Democrats are targeting Republican-held seats in the 2026 midterms.

In Alaska, Sullivan faces a competitive challenge from Democratic former Rep. Mary Peltola. Democrats need a net gain of four Senate seats to regain majority control in the 100-member chamber with less than five weeks remaining until the election.

  1. Eight nuclear facilities and an LNG pipeline? The scale of these promises is staggering, but I need to see concrete details first.

  2. I love the idea of cheaper energy, but is it really worth the massive environmental risk to Alaska’s pristine landscapes?

  3. An 807-mile pipeline through Alaska sounds ambitious, but funding and environmental permits could delay this by decades.
