Ukraine is prepared to stop attacks on Russian energy infrastructure if Moscow commits to the same restraint, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Tuesday. Speaking to journalists at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Zelensky emphasized that both Kyiv and Washington share the goal of ending the conflict before winter sets in.
“We are ready for any kind of format of energy ceasefire if Russia agrees to not attack our energy system,” Zelensky said. However, he acknowledged uncertainty regarding Moscow’s stance, expressing hope that the United States could facilitate negotiations to bring Russia to the table.
The announcement follows a meeting between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump, which Zelensky described as “positive and productive.” In a post on X, the Ukrainian leader noted that both nations are eager to conclude what he termed the “senseless Russian war.” This comes amid conflicting signals from Washington; Trump had recently suggested that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to spare each other’s energy facilities, shortly after criticizing Kyiv for striking Russian oil refineries.
Recent US-led mediation efforts have stalled as American focus has shifted toward its tensions with Iran. Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine have escalated long-range strikes against civilian targets, including factories, warehouses, port infrastructure, and ships in the Black Sea, since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
