Nate Bolotin, a co-founder of XYZ Films, is stepping down from the studio after nearly two decades, according to an exclusive report by Variety. Bolotin established the company in 2008 alongside partners Nick Spicer and Aram Tertzakian.
Under Bolotin’s leadership, XYZ evolved from a small startup into an international operation handling production, financing, sales, and distribution. A statement from the studio highlighted his long-standing partnership, noting, “Nate has been a trusted partner and friend since the company’s inception.” The team expressed gratitude for his contributions over the past 18 years and wished him well in future endeavors.
Spicer, who serves as CEO, will continue to oversee the studio alongside COO Maxime Cottray and Head of Creative Tertzakian. Key executives such as Guy Danella, Head of Film, and sales leaders Pip Ngo and Marie Garrett remain in their roles.
XYZ Films has an active slate of upcoming projects, including “Flesh of the Gods,” an A24 release starring Kristen Stewart and Wagner Moura, directed by Panos Cosmatos. Other forthcoming titles include Amazon MGM Studios’ “Egg Baby,” directed by Natalia Anderson; “Banquet,” helmed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia; and “The Girlfriend,” directed by Natalie Morales and featuring Glenn Howerton, Meghann Fahy, and Rosario Dawson.
During his tenure, Bolotin was instrumental in launching several notable films, such as Gareth Evans’ action titles “The Raid” and “The Raid 2,” Karyn Kusama’s “The Invitation,” Babak Anvari’s “Under the Shadow,” Macon Blair’s “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore,” Panos Cosmatos’ “Mandy,” Joe “Arctic,” and Matt Johnson’s “BlackBerry.”
Their action genre catalog is undefeated. The Raid alone makes this a significant loss for the studio.
Imagine leaving after building something that huge. Bold move or just burnout?
Eighteen years is a long time in Hollywood. Curious what Bolotin plans to do next.
Wait, so Nate is officially gone? I thought he was still involved in development meetings.
R.I.P. to the good old days of XYZ. That horror slate was genuinely incredible.
