Why September is the ideal time to rebuild your routine

Why September is the ideal time to rebuild your routine

As the leisurely pace of summer fades, September has emerged as a prime opportunity for establishing new routines, offering a gentler alternative to the strict regimens often associated with the start of the year. The month naturally coincides with significant life transitions, such as returning to university, starting a new job, or resuming the daily school run, creating a psychological opening for change.

On social media platforms like TikTok, the “September Reset” has gained traction as a movement focused on manageable adjustments rather than radical overhauls. Cami Sophia, a 24-year-old content creator and podcast host from Northampton, describes the period as a chance to restore order after the spontaneity of summer. She notes that the return to structure helps individuals “get ahead of the game” before January arrives.

Professor Bas Verplanken, emeritus of social psychology at the University of Bath, supports this timing based on his research. He found that individuals who have recently experienced major life disruptions, such as moving homes, are more receptive to interventions promoting sustainable behaviors. Verplanken describes this as an exciting way to leverage disruption, suggesting that if current daily commutes or routines are not working, now is the optimal moment to explore alternatives.

Despite the abundance of advice online, Sophia cautions against becoming overwhelmed by spreadsheets of drastic changes. Instead, she recommends a phased approach: reviewing goals set earlier in the year and identifying three “non-negotiable” small habits, such as incorporating fruit into breakfast or drinking water before coffee. To maintain these habits, she emphasizes the importance of planning ahead, such as meal prepping and scheduling workouts, to remove friction from daily decisions.

Verplanken agrees that consistency stems from designing routines where desired behaviors are the easiest option. He advises creating specific plans regarding where, when, and what actions to take, such as automatically checking fat and sugar content while shopping. By repeatedly setting up situations that facilitate these choices, individuals can make positive habits an effortless part of their daily lives.

  1. The professor’s point about designing routines so good choices are effortless is spot on. Planning ahead really does remove daily friction.

  2. Does this actually work, or is it just another trend manufactured for engagement? I’m skeptical about leveraging disruption for habit building.

  3. I’ve tried the ‘September Reset’ before but always felt pressured to do everything at once. Maybe I should just stick to three small habits?

  4. Finally, someone admits New Year’s resolutions are brutal. A gentle September reset sounds way more sustainable for me.
