Why Keeping Your Smart TV in Standby Mode Is Actually Beneficial

Modern televisions do not fully power off when you press the remote’s power button; instead, they enter a deep sleep or standby state. While this mode consumes a minimal amount of electricity, it offers significant advantages regarding performance, software maintenance, and hardware longevity.

The most immediate benefit is reduced wait time. Contemporary smart TVs run complex operating systems similar to those found on smartphones, including LG’s WebOS, Google TV, Amazon Fire TV OS, and Roku OS. Because many models utilize lower-end processors than flagship phones, a complete cold boot can take several minutes. Standby mode allows the device to resume almost instantly, saving viewers from lengthy delays.

Beyond convenience, standby mode enables critical background tasks. Manufacturers utilize this idle time to push software updates and refresh streaming applications like Netflix and YouTube without interrupting the user. For OLED television owners, this function is essential for panel health. When an OLED TV enters standby, it often initiates an automatic pixel-refresh cycle designed to mitigate image retention and burn-in—two of the most significant risks associated with OLED technology. Interrupting this process by fully shutting down or unplugging the set immediately after viewing can lead to uneven display wear over time.

Despite these benefits, there are scenarios where powering down is the better choice. In the United States, ENERGY STAR-certified TVs are required to draw no more than one watt in standby mode. Over the course of a year, this equates to approximately 9 kWh of energy, adding roughly $1.50 to an average electric bill, though costs vary significantly by region with places like California seeing higher rates.

Experts recommend unplugging the television if you will be away from home for an extended period to eliminate even this small energy drain. Additionally, periodic restarts can improve performance by clearing cached background processes that may cause sluggishness or lag. Users should consult their owner’s manual for proper restart instructions, as forcibly disconnecting power can disrupt ongoing maintenance cycles.
