According to estimates from AdImpact, a firm that monitors political advertising expenditures across television, digital, and connected TV platforms, the federal government has allocated at least $1.7 million for three separate television spots featuring President Donald Trump in recent days.
Opponents of the campaign argue that the spending may contravene federal propaganda statutes. In response, the White House has characterized the spots as public service announcements, drawing parallels to similar efforts undertaken by previous administrations to promote Medicare drug coverage and encourage sign-ups for Affordable Care Act exchanges.
The newest spot depicts the president in black and white, strolling down a corridor while labeling his political opponents as part of a “deep state,” “globalists,” and a “sick political class that hates our country.” The footage includes a close-up of Trump glaring into the camera while a voiceover pledges to defeat the “fake news media” and free America from these perceived adversaries.
Officials noted that the video was also circulated by Trump three years prior.
