In a southwestern Washington district still reeling from the deaths of eleven workers at a paper mill, Democratic Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez is confronting a formidable challenge for her congressional seat.
The incident occurred on a foggy morning in May at a local hospital where Laura Oltmann, a 41-year-old dietitian, was beginning her shift. According to Oltmann, the facility uses overhead pages to announce various types of emergencies, but the nature of this particular alert was unusual and rarely heard.
“We get overhead pages for different types of emergencies. But this one, we don’t get very often,” Oltmann recalled, reflecting on the sudden and tragic event that has since cast a long shadow over the community’s political landscape.
The disaster has not only traumatized the local workforce but has also become a central issue in the region’s upcoming race for the House of Representatives, pitting the incumbent Democrat against a tough opponent in a district determined to seek accountability and change.
I never realized this district had such complex dynamics. How is the incumbent handling the accountability demand?
Is the political race really overshadowing the urgent safety reforms? Seems like a distraction to me.
Eleven lives lost is heartbreaking. My thoughts are with the families and the whole community right now.
