STRASBOURG — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered her annual State of the European Union address on Wednesday, using the platform to propose a ban on social media, online gaming, and chatbot access for children under the age of 13. The speech, held in Strasbourg, outlined several key policy directions for the bloc.
Alongside digital safety measures, von der Leyen emphasized the importance of strengthening transatlantic relationships outside of Washington. She specifically proposed closer ties with Canada, including the possibility of granting the country “associate member” status within certain EU frameworks.
The proposals reflect ongoing efforts by EU leadership to regulate the digital economy while simultaneously seeking new economic partnerships to diversify trade and energy routes amid shifting global dynamics.

Great idea, but enforcement is the real challenge. Kids will just find workarounds regardless of what the EU proposes.
