Indonesia suspended operations at its main international airport on Sunday as a cloud of volcanic ash drifted across the region, disrupting travel for more than 22,000 passengers. The closure impacted approximately 209 flights, with services to and from Singapore being particularly hard-hit.
The disruption followed an eruption of the Anak Krakatoa volcano on Saturday. According to Indonesia’s geology agency, the event produced lava and generated booming sounds audible up to 700 kilometers (435 miles) away.
