Viola Davis has been selected as the recipient of the Gregory Peck Award for Cinematic Excellence at this year’s San Diego International Film Festival. The honor recognizes her multifaceted career as an artist, producer, philanthropist, activist, and New York Times bestselling author, noting her status as an EGOT winner.
Tonya Mantooth, CEO and artistic director of the festival, praised Davis in a statement. “Viola Davis is one of the most extraordinary artists of our time,” Mantooth said. “Her performances bring power, vulnerability and truth to every role, while her work beyond the screen has helped create opportunities for others. The Gregory Peck Award celebrates an enduring contribution to cinema, and Viola Davis embodies that legacy.”
The award will be presented by Cecilia Peck during the Night of the Stars Tribute on October 13. This ceremony marks the beginning of the festival’s 25th year. The event will take place in San Diego, California, as part of a run scheduled from October 13 through October 18.
Additionally, the festival announced that Jesse Eisenberg’s “The Debut” will serve as the opening night film. Information regarding passes and tickets is available on the official San Diego International Film Festival website.
Meanwhile, Studio Ghibli Fest 2026 is set to bring Hayao Miyazaki’s “Princess Mononoke” back to theaters. Presented by GKIDS and Fathom Entertainment, a 4K restoration of the film will screen from September 26 to September 30 in both Japanese and English-dubbed versions. The English dub features voice work by Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Billy Bob Thornton.
