A 50-year-old Vietnamese-Australian human rights advocate known for his work against human trafficking has not been heard from since 18 September. His disappearance has drawn international attention as the Vietnamese government continues to detain three activists, one of whom holds Australian citizenship.
Authorities in Vietnam have charged the individuals with fabricated offenses, according to reports. The government states that the three detainees confessed to being members of Viet Tan, a pro-democracy group that Hanoi classifies as a terrorist organization.
Tran Hiep has long campaigned against human trafficking and is the subject of concern among human rights observers following his silence.
