Verstappen Claims Maiden Singapore Victory as Antonelli Closes Title Gap

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen secured his first-ever victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, marking his second dominant win in as many weeks following his triumph in Malaysia. The result reinforces Red Bull’s return to the front of the grid, with Verstappen controlling the race from start to finish after a tense opening corner battle.

Verstappen knew that gaining the lead early was crucial due to the overtaking difficulties inherent in the street circuit. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc achieved a superior start and challenged down the inside into Turn One, but the Dutch driver squeezed his rival toward the pit wall, forcing Leclerc to back off and allowing Verstappen to claim the apex.

While Verstappen and Leclerc established a gap over the following laps, the race drama centered on Ferrari’s strategy regarding Lewis Hamilton. Starting on medium tires, Hamilton pitted on lap 18 to switch to softs, whereas Leclerc waited until lap 24. Ferrari elected not to instruct Leclerc to yield to his teammate, a decision Hamilton questioned from the cockpit.

The situation complicated further when a virtual safety car was deployed on lap 39. Leclerc and Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, who had been closing in on the Ferraris, utilized the pause for a faster pit stop. Hamilton, running on older tires, stayed out and briefly moved into second place behind Verstappen. However, Ferrari informed Hamilton he needed to pit again, estimating his tires would fail six laps before the end. Hamilton eventually ceded position to Leclerc on lap 46.

As Hamilton’s tires degraded, he lost ground to Antonelli and the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Norris attempted a pass on lap 54, forcing Hamilton wide onto the escape road at Turn One. This error allowed Antonelli to overtake, followed shortly by Norris. Piastri then passed Hamilton on the final lap after a determined defensive effort from the British driver.

Antonelli’s third-place finish, combined with George Russell’s recovery drive to ninth after starting 19th, extended the Italian’s championship lead to 102 points. This margin puts Antonelli in a strong position to clinch his first world title at the United States Grand Prix on October 25, provided he wins and Russell finishes ninth or lower.

Russell managed to advance to seventh before being held up by Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly, ultimately finishing ninth. Isack Hadjar completed the points scorers in 10th for Red Bull after starting from the back of the grid.
