This visual encounter serves as a precursor to a more significant astronomical event on September 14, when the moon will pass directly in front of Venus, an occultation visible from select regions across Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Venus, often dubbed “Earth’s twin” due to its comparable size and rocky makeup, will appear as a dazzling point of light in the evening sky. It will sit slightly more than five degrees away from the 9%-illuminated waxing moon—a distance roughly equivalent to holding three middle fingers up at arm’s length.
However, spotting the moon may prove more challenging, as its slender illuminated sliver can be easily washed out by the sun’s glare. Both objects will hover less than 10 degrees above the horizon at dusk, remaining visible for under an hour before setting with the sun.

Astronomers strongly caution against attempting to view the event through telescopes or binoculars during daylight hours, as looking directly at the sun can cause permanent vision damage.
By the evening of September 15, the waxing crescent moon will appear to have shifted to the left of Venus as the planet approaches its maximum brightness in its current evening apparition on September 18.
