Vatican Confirms Pope Leo’s Lung Surgery Successful

Rome — Pope Leo XIV successfully underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove a nodule from his lung, according to a statement released by the Vatican. The procedure took place at the Gemelli Hospital, one of Rome’s most prestigious medical centers and the traditional treatment site for pontiffs.

The Vatican described the operation as being completed within the expected timeframe and according to plan. While specific details regarding whether the nodule was tested for cancer were not immediately provided, officials estimated a recovery period of about a week. The Pope has been 71 years old since his recent disclosure of the health issue.

The surgery lasted approximately seven hours. Pope Leo was greeted by the hospital’s medical director, Andrea Cambieri, prior to the procedure. All of the pontiff’s scheduled engagements have been canceled through October 20.

This event marks a notable shift toward transparency regarding papal health. Unlike previous administrations that were often criticized for vague or withholding health updates, Pope Leo informed thousands of worshippers at a Sunday prayer service in St. Peter’s Square about the upcoming operation.

Medical experts note that this type of surgical intervention is standard for determining if a lump is malignant. Oncologists suggest that if the nodule proves to be cancerous, Leo’s prognosis is excellent due to the early detection of the issue.

Despite the temporary cancellation of public events, the Pope is still expected to proceed with a planned trip to South America in November.

  1. Does the South America trip still stand? The November schedule sounds ambitious with only a week of recovery.

  2. I’m relieved it’s successful, but seven hours is quite long for a nodule removal. Hope he rests well.

  3. Transparent papal health updates are definitely a refreshing change from the old secretive days. Good luck to Leo!
