A significant Vincent Van Gogh painting, valued at approximately $180 million (£136 million), has been unveiled to the public ahead of its upcoming auction. The work, titled *Châtaigniers en fleurs*, was created during the final two months of the artist’s life.
The piece is the centerpiece of a sale featuring 12 works from a private collection long regarded as having “almost mythical status.” For more than five decades, the holdings remained privately owned, with the assemblage often compared to a miniature version of Paris’s Musée d’Orsay due to its exceptional quality and concentration of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces.
Alongside the Van Gogh, the auction will feature notable works by other renowned artists, including Paul Cézanne and Claude Monet, marking a rare public appearance for several pieces that have been hidden from view for generations.
A Cezanne and Monet alongside Van Gogh? That’s an extraordinary concentration of genius in one room, even if it’s just for the auction preview.
This market is insane. What qualifies as ‘mythical status’ anymore when millions of dollars are on the line?
How fascinating that it hasn’t been seen in fifty years! I wonder if the canvas held up well after all that time in private storage.
I can’t believe an $180 million painting is going to the highest bidder again. It feels like such a waste of public history.
