A Republican lawmaker from Utah, Sen. John Curtis, is formally requesting that Senate Judiciary Committee leadership issue subpoenas to Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden. The demand is part of a broader inquiry into whether relationships tied to the presidency have been leveraged for private financial gain, preferential treatment, or access by domestic and international actors.
In a letter addressed to Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Ranking Member Dick Durbin, Curtis argued that congressional oversight must remain consistent regardless of which party occupies the White House. “The country should not have to accept one standard for the family of a Republican president and another for the family of a Democratic president,” the senator wrote.
The push follows recent reports that Donald Trump Jr.’s two-day wedding afterparty in May was funded by a Russian oligarch with close ties to President Vladimir Putin. Curtis condemned these allegations on social media platform X, describing the situation as indicative of corruption and promising further action.
President Donald Trump recently stated that his son reimbursed the oligarch for the afterparty costs, though no documentation of such repayment has been made public. The president characterized the arrangement as a gift from a friend that was common in such contexts.
Curtis specifically asked for the committee to investigate the business dealings, foreign relationships, gifts, and benefits received by both Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden, as well as any instances where their presidential connections were perceived to provide value.
Hunter Biden has long been the subject of Republican scrutiny regarding unproven allegations that he and his father, then Vice President Joe Biden, influenced Ukrainian officials to dismiss a prosecutor investigating Burisma, the energy company where Hunter served on the board. Curtis’s letter highlights concerns over Hunter Biden’s “substantial business with foreign entities” while his father held or sought public office.
Regarding Donald Trump Jr., Curtis cited worries about his interactions with foreign business figures, significant gifts, and ventures including cryptocurrency promotions, international real estate deals involving foreign heads of state, and defense contracting investments. The senator warned these activities could create national security vulnerabilities or the appearance of favoritism.
Sen. Dick Durbin expressed support for the request on Tuesday, calling it a “good faith” effort. “Corruption must never be tolerated,” Durbin said in a statement. “To ignore this is to run the risk of being complicit. I will join in supporting Senator Curtis’ request of the Judiciary Committee.”
As of now, no response has been received from Sen. Grassley regarding the request. Although Curtis is not a member of the Judiciary Committee and would not participate in any vote on the subpoenas, his letter represents the most direct challenge from a Republican on Capitol Hill concerning the recent reports about Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding.
