The United States faces growing humanitarian scrutiny following airstrikes on Ecuadorian fishing boats, a situation that has drawn sharp contrast to recent diplomatic engagements in the region. While Secretary of State Marco Rubio was honored by Ecuador’s president in Quito for contributions toward regional peace, ten Ecuadorian fishers found themselves stranded in the eastern Pacific after their vessel was destroyed by US forces.
The incident occurred on September 8, just one day prior to Rubio’s arrival in the capital. According to reports, a US patrol vessel intercepted the fishing boat named Don Rufo in international waters near the Ecuadorian coast and subsequently blew it up.
Legal representatives for the affected fishermen have expressed serious concerns regarding the economic devastation caused by the strikes, stating that the workers are losing their livelihoods. Despite these allegations and the resulting displacement of local fishers, the Trump administration remains steadfast in its approach. Rubio has publicly maintained that the US is prepared to destroy ships if deemed necessary to enforce its maritime policies.
