The United States military conducted strikes against four Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday, escalating tensions in the region. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the operation was a direct response to attacks launched by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) against a US Navy warship.
According to CENTCOM, the IRGC targeted the American vessel with ballistic missiles on two separate occasions over the preceding 48 hours. No immediate reports of casualties aboard the tankers have been released.
Iranian media outlets reported hearing explosions near the southern port city of Jask and on Kharg Island. Both locations are critical hubs for Iran’s oil export infrastructure.
The attack follows a period of heightened military activity in the Persian Gulf, raising concerns about the security of maritime trade routes through the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of global oil supplies pass.
