James Danly, the DOE’s Deputy Secretary, stated that the Iowa plant’s anticipated restart in 2029 would help reduce electricity costs, though he did not provide specific details on how those savings would be achieved.
The revival of Duane Arnold aligns with a broader surge in demand for clean, reliable energy driven by the artificial intelligence boom. Google has reportedly planned to construct up to six data centers near the plant in Linn County, Iowa. The facility originally shut down in 2020 after a severe rainstorm caused damage, prompting NextEra to mothball the site rather than pursue immediate repairs amid a market saturated with cheap natural gas.
NextEra CEO John Ketchum revealed during a earnings call last year that only 50 megawatts of the plant’s capacity will be allocated to the local power cooperative. Similarly, Meta recently partnered with Constellation to purchase the clean energy attributes from the Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois, a deal that helps Meta offset emissions from its Hyperion AI data center, a project estimated to consume more power than the entire state of South Dakota.
Industry analysts view these refurbished sites as the most viable short-term solutions for increasing nuclear capacity in the United States. According to a recent Utility Dive report, only one or two additional plants may be feasible candidates for restart. These potential sites, such as San Onofre in California, have been shuttered for longer periods and would likely require more extensive work to bring back online compared to Duane Arnold or Three Mile Island.
