United States military officials announced Tuesday that they destroyed several Iranian tankers following an attack by Iran on a US Navy warship using ballistic missiles. The incident, which occurred in the Strait of Hormuz region, has contributed to renewed violence across the Middle East and pushed crude oil prices close to $100 per barrel.
According to a statement from US Central Command (Centcom), American forces targeted the vessels in the Gulf of Oman and near Iran’s Kharg Island. The command emphasized that crew members were instructed to abandon ship prior to the strikes being carried out.
The exchange of fire marks another escalation in regional tensions, as Iranian forces attempted to hit the American vessel but were reportedly evaded, prompting the retaliatory strike on the tankers.
