Two individuals removed from the United States to Equatorial Guinea under the Trump administration were subjected to physical abuse while in custody, according to human rights attorneys and witness accounts. The pair, identified as nationals of Egypt and Eritrea, were reportedly bound and forced to wear bags over their heads before being beaten and pushed down a staircase. These incidents occurred in full view of other American deportees still being held.
Following the assault, the two men were transferred to a prison facility. Approximately 30 other detainees from the US remain confined at the Hotel Bamy, located on the outskirts of the coastal capital, Malabo. Rights advocates have raised alarms regarding the harsh conditions and violence prevalent within the hotel detention site.
Detainees allege that the beating served as retaliation for the men sharing details about the poor living conditions and brutality inside the facility with the press and human rights organizations. Those affected report suffering from traumatic flashbacks and live in fear that they will face further retribution.
