The United States, Denmark, and Greenland are scheduled to sign a security agreement on Tuesday during the UN General Assembly in New York, marking a significant expansion of American military involvement in the Arctic territory. Denmark’s government confirmed that the deal, announced recently, aims to bolster regional defense while explicitly recognizing Copenhagen’s sovereignty over Greenland.
US President Donald Trump stated last Friday that the arrangement grants America “permanent control” over Greenland security. The Arctic territory, an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has been a long-term strategic interest for Trump, who has repeatedly argued that US control is necessary for geopolitical reasons since returning to the White House in January 2025.
The signing ceremony will take place at 1430 GMT inside the UN building, with participants including Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, President Trump, and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
In a statement on Monday, Frederiksen emphasized that the unpublished agreement acknowledges the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination. Describing the deal as beneficial from a Danish perspective, she told Danish radio DR that strengthening security in the Nordic region and the Arctic also serves NATO and European interests.
Washington states that the pact is designed to prevent China and Russia from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments in Greenland without US consent. Frederiksen highlighted the strategic importance of the area, noting, “The Arctic region, the North Atlantic, constitute an important defence zone for all members of the NATO alliance,” adding that the terms had been agreed upon with the Americans over a prolonged period.
