Taiwan has received the initial pair of F-16V Block 70 fighter jets from the United States, a significant move in its ongoing effort to bolster military capabilities against the growing threat posed by China. The two aircraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, touched down on Friday at midday local time, concluding a journey that passed through Hawaii and Guam.
This delivery is part of a broader $8 billion contract for 66 F-16Vs, originally authorized during President Donald Trump’s first term. The arrival followed months of postponement, largely due to repeated diplomatic pressures from Beijing urging Washington to halt arms sales to the island. The jets arrived approximately a week after President Trump held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington.
Taiwan faces increasing military pressure from China, which views the democratically governed island as its own territory and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve unification. Wellington Koo, Taiwan’s Minister of National Defence, confirmed that the delivery was only the beginning, stating that more aircraft are expected before the end of the year.
The shipment has reignited discussions regarding the stability of US support for Taiwan under the current administration. While the US is legally mandated to assist Taiwan in its self-defense, the two nations maintain no formal diplomatic relations. In May, Trump indicated he was holding back on a proposed $14 billion aid package for Taiwan, although he had previously approved an $11 billion deal in December 2025.
Despite these fluctuations, Washington has reiterated its commitment to the region. A State Department spokesperson emphasized that US policy remains unchanged, affirming support for allies and partners across the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan.
The upgraded F-16Vs, enhanced in 2023 with advanced avionics, radar, and weaponry, are designed to better counter the People’s Liberation Army Air Force, particularly its J-20 stealth fighters. However, the US has so far declined to supply Taiwan with its most sophisticated combat aircraft, such as the F-22 and F-35 models.
F-16Vs are great, but can they truly counter the J-20 stealth fighters? I wonder if more advanced tech is actually coming down the line.
Is Trump really holding back that $14 billion aid package? That seems like a major shift from his previous approval.
Finally some tangible action after all the delays. It’s about time Taiwan got the hardware they’ve been waiting for.
