Detroit — As President Donald Trump prepares to host Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, a unified coalition of US automakers, suppliers, and legislators is lobbying the administration to maintain strict barriers against Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers entering the American market.
The urgency stems from Trump’s recent comments suggesting he might consider allowing Chinese carmakers into the US if they agreed to manufacture vehicles domestically. This potential pivot has prompted a consortium representing every major segment of the US auto industry to urgently advise against easing restrictions.
More than two dozen Democratic lawmakers reinforced this stance with a letter urging Trump to uphold existing bans. Senator Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat from Michigan, emphasized that the issue has transcended traditional partisan lines.
“It’s not at this point a partisan issue,” Slotkin told reporters. “It’s about whether we want to make cars in America and whether we want a manufacturing base that can pivot when we need it. If we want that, we shouldn’t let them in our country.”
The diplomatic meeting is expected to include high-profile industry figures from China. Reports indicate the Chinese delegation could feature Wang Chuanfu, founder and CEO of BYD, China’s largest automaker, and Robin Zeng, founder of CATL, the world’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicle batteries.
Michael Dunne, a former General Motors executive and specialist in China’s automotive sector, warned that the presence of these executives highlights the stakes. He pointed to Europe as a cautionary tale, noting that the continent has already experienced an influx of Chinese vehicles that is reshaping its automotive landscape. “The same could happen in the US,” Dunne cautioned.
On the US side, General Motors CEO Mary Barra is expected to attend the state dinner hosted by Trump for President Xi, according to Reuters. Tesla CEO Elon Musk is also anticipated to be present, alongside other top American auto executives.
The convergence of political pressure and industry advocacy comes as bipartisan bills aiming to permanently ban Chinese automakers from the US market advance through Congress, signaling deep concern over the competitive threat posed by China’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle industry.
