Understanding LiDAR on iPhone: Functions and Usage Guide

The LiDAR scanner on select iPhone Pro models is a subtle but powerful tool often overlooked next to the rear cameras. Rather than capturing images, this sensor emits invisible light pulses to calculate the distance to nearby objects and surfaces, providing essential depth data to iOS features and third-party applications.

LiDAR, an acronym for light detection and ranging, works by measuring how long it takes for light pulses to bounce back after hitting a surface. This data allows Apple’s ARKit framework to generate three-dimensional maps of physical environments, helping apps recognize floors, walls, and furniture. Additionally, the technology supports Apple’s RoomPlan framework, which creates detailed 3D models of interior spaces by combining camera imagery with LiDAR readings.

Beyond augmented reality, the sensor enhances photography. On supported devices, LiDAR assists with faster autofocus in low-light conditions and enables Night mode portraits by providing accurate depth information.

Introduced with the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max in 2020, LiDAR has remained a feature exclusive to the Pro lineup. It is available on all Pro and Pro Max models through the iPhone 17 series. Standard iPhones, including mini, Plus, Air, and non-Pro variants, do not include the sensor. Users can verify their device model via Settings > General > About. The technology is also present in every iPad Pro since the fourth-generation models released in March 2020.

While there is no manual toggle for LiDAR in the settings, users can interact with its capabilities through built-in apps. The Measure app allows for manual dimensioning by aligning a center dot with object endpoints. On LiDAR-equipped Pro models, the app offers automated edge guides, a Ruler view, and the ability to measure human height when the subject is fully visible.

For more complex tasks, dedicated applications leveraging RoomPlan or ARKit can scan rooms and place virtual objects with greater precision. The system automatically activates the sensor when these apps require depth data.

LiDAR also plays a critical role in accessibility. The Magnifier app’s Detection Mode uses the sensor to identify people, doors, and furniture, relaying this information through audio cues or haptic feedback. Apple advises that this feature should not be used as a primary navigation tool or in scenarios where measurement errors could lead to danger.
