Moscow, Russia — Ukrainian forces executed a massive drone campaign against Russia overnight, launching more than 1,000 unmanned aerial vehicles, including hundreds aimed directly at the capital. The assault coincided with the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections, which officials in Kyiv described as an attempt to disrupt the political process.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin characterized the incident as the “largest ever” attack on the city. He reported that 450 drones were shot down before reaching their targets, but noted that the strike caused damage to a residential building and the Moscow Oil Refinery.
Andrei Vorobyov, the governor of the Moscow region, confirmed that the attack resulted in two fatalities and 20 injuries. The deceased were identified as a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that its air defenses intercepted a total of 1,110 Ukrainian drones across the country, including over Crimea and in the Black Sea. Mayor Sobyanin dismissed the attack as an unsuccessful effort to interfere with the voting.
“The enemy failed in this regard,” Sobyanin said on social media.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Kyiv employed a variety of domestically produced weapons, including Flamingo and Pelican missiles, to target Russian energy and logistics assets. “These are billions of dollars that sustain the war machine,” Zelenskyy said, emphasizing the goal of inflicting economic pressure on Moscow.
The offensive comes as the conflict has evolved into a long-range aerial duel. While ground fighting along the 1,250-kilometer front line in eastern and southern Ukraine has slowed due to heavy drone and robot deployment, both sides continue to strike deep into each other’s territory.
The strikes also drew a response from Washington. On Friday, the U.S. State Department approved a potential $2.68 billion sale of air defense equipment to Ukraine. Additionally, President Donald Trump signed a bill introducing new sanctions against Russia after Congress overcame opposition to pass the measure.
The election being held in Russia is widely viewed as a formality cementing Vladimir Putin’s dominance, with virtually no opposition allowed. Balloting took place in Russian-controlled territories and the illegally annexed Crimean peninsula, actions Kyiv continues to condemn.
Besides the attacks on Russia, Zelenskyy reported continued Russian aggression against Ukraine. A drone strike on a monastery in the Kherson region killed a clergy member and wounded four others on Saturday. In the Kyiv region, an attack on Saturday evening killed a mother and her two children, with a third child later dying in the hospital on Sunday, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv regional state administration.
