Ukrainian troops have pushed Russian forces into retreat in the eastern Donetsk region, marking a significant shift in the ground war. According to Telegram channel Rybar, which is aligned with the Kremlin, Russian units are losing control of villages south of Lyman. This area has been a key staging point for Moscow’s attempts to capture the fortified cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
The Ukrainian counteroffensive, designated “Operation Vivaldi,” has since its launch earlier this year retaken 175 square kilometers of territory around Lyman. Rybar noted that Russian troops are now forced to defend previously held positions east of Sloviansk rather than launching new attacks, suggesting that an assault on the urban center of Sloviansk is receding into the distant future. A critical strategic point remains the village of Kryva Luka, located on high ground on the Russian-held right bank of the Siversky-Donets River.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the operation as successful but incomplete. Military analysts suggest that premature Russian claims of liberating villages before Ukrainian forces had fully secured them inadvertently revealed their defensive plans, allowing Kyiv to concentrate forces for counterattacks.
While gains are being made on the front lines, Russia has intensified its aerial campaign against civilian infrastructure. On October 7, coinciding with President Vladimir Putin’s birthday, a Russian cruise missile struck a five-story apartment building in Pryluky, Chernihiv region, killing 22 people, including five children. The following day, a bomb hit two city buses in Kramatorsk, killing at least 30 people. On October 7 alone, Russia launched 130 drones, 48 cruise missiles, and ballistics across 12 regions.
Casualty figures indicate escalating losses for both sides. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence reported that Russian casualties reached a record 46,230 in September, with over 70 percent confirmed as killed. Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, stated that enemy casualties increased by 40 percent in the first five days of October compared to the same period last month. Total Russian dead and wounded since the full-scale invasion began in 2022 now stand at 1,545,950.
In response to the barrage of jet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones, which travel at speeds exceeding 500 km/h and use sophisticated navigation systems, Ukraine has accelerated the deployment of F-16 fighter jets. Zelenskyy stated that F-16s are currently intercepting between 50 and 60 percent of drone attacks. Additionally, Kyiv is testing new interceptor drones and has deployed AI-driven heavy machine-gun turrets around strategic sites in and around the capital.
Ukraine has also expanded its long-range strike capabilities, targeting Russian energy and military infrastructure. Recent attacks hit refineries in Volgograd and Bashkortostan, as well as the Samara linear production and dispatch station, a major hub for the export-grade Urals oil blend. Ukraine’s military claimed that over 51 percent of Russia’s oil refining capacity has been disabled. Further strikes targeted the Astrakhan Gas Processing Plant and airfields in Adygea and Bryansk, destroying multiple aircraft.
On the diplomatic front, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited Kyiv on October 7 to announce a €1.3 billion military aid package and sign agreements worth €8.5 billion for joint defense production, including drone interception systems. The visit was seen as a significant political gesture following recent electoral setbacks for Merz’s CDU party in two German states.
Operation Vivaldi looks strategic. Pushing them back from Sloviansk changes the entire map for winter.
Germany’s new defense deals are huge. Hope this sustained aid actually reaches the front lines effectively soon.
The F-16 intercepting 50-60% of drones sounds impressive, but that still means half are getting through. Not exactly a perfect solution.
Are we sure about these casualty numbers? They seem suspiciously round and convenient for morale boosting lately.
Territory gains mean little when civilians are being slaughtered in their homes. The humanity loss is just staggering.
