British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has authorized limited military assistance to Saudi Arabia, authorizing the Royal Air Force (RAF) to provide defensive air-to-air refueling for Saudi aircraft. The decision comes as the Middle Eastern kingdom faces escalating attacks from Yemen’s Houthi rebels, marking a significant step in UK support for its Gulf ally.
Burnham announced the move on Monday while en route to New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He confirmed that London had received an official request from Riyadh for military support. Describing the deployment as “time-limited” and “defensive,” the Prime Minister emphasized that the operation aims to help Saudi Arabia repel incoming threats rather than enabling offensive strikes against the Iran-backed group.
According to reports citing UK officials, the mission is expected to commence within days and could last for several weeks. The operation will utilize the RAF’s Voyager tanker fleet. This support supplements the existing UK Sky Sabre air defense system currently deployed in the region. The PA news agency reported that the primary objective is to assist Saudi jets in defending against drone and missile barrages.
Burnham justified the intervention by citing British national interests and regional stability. “We need to keep those pathways open,” he stated, referring to critical oil shipping routes. The UK leader noted that Saudi Arabia has been subjected to ongoing attacks and faces the potential for further disruption to energy infrastructure.
Tensions between Riyadh and the Houthis have intensified significantly since July, when a 2022 truce collapsed. The breakdown occurred after the Houthis permitted an Iranian aircraft to land in Sanaa, violating Saudi-enforced controls over Yemeni airspace. The situation deteriorated further last Saturday when a Houthi strike targeted Riyadh, marking the first attack on the Saudi capital in years. Additionally, the rebels have declared a blockade on shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea, while also directing drones and missiles at oil facilities within Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s largest exporters.
In response to the worsening crisis, foreign ministers from the G7 nations issued a joint statement on Monday during the UNGA sidelines. The statement strongly condemned the “unacceptable continued strikes” by the Houthis in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia, calling on the group to “immediately cease all military actions, all threats and attacks against civilian shipping.” The ministers also urged Iran to end its support for the rebels, including the provision of arms.
