UK Regulators Pressed to Act as Polymarket Takes Bets on Bank Failures

British regulators are under increasing pressure to step in after it was revealed that Polymarket, the American-owned prediction platform, has accepted substantial wagers on the potential insolvency of major UK lenders HSBC and Lloyds.

The platform, known for accepting bets on diverse topics ranging from sports outcomes to geopolitical events, permitted users to accumulate $77,507 (£58,530) in positions betting that the two banking giants would fail before the end of the year.

This development has ignited fresh concerns regarding the impact of online prediction markets on the integrity of the financial system, prompting calls for urgent oversight.

  1. Doesn’t the FCA already have rules against this? I thought prediction markets on financial institutions were strictly off-limits here.

  2. Wait, people are actually betting on bank failures? The sheer audacity is both terrifying and slightly fascinating.

  3. This feels like a dangerous loophole. Regulators need to close this gap before it destabilizes real markets.
