UK Police Probe Iran Link to Bomb Threat at US-Used RAF Fairford

British counter-terrorism authorities are examining a potential connection to Iran following a thwarted alleged bombing conspiracy targeting a Royal Air Force base in England that hosts United States military assets. The investigation was triggered over the weekend, leading to the detention of five men near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on suspicion of terrorism and explosives-related offenses.

RAF Fairford has served as a critical command post for U.S. Air Force operations across Europe and has been utilized for American strikes against Iranian missile positions. In July, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard issued warnings that any airfields supporting attacks on the Islamic Republic would be considered legitimate military targets. Iranian Ambassador Seyed Ali Mousavi had previously characterized the permission granted to U.S. bombers to operate from Fairford as a significant issue regarding Iran’s self-defense.

According to reports from The Daily Telegraph, UK police believe Iran is the most probable state actor behind the incident. Sources indicated that if Iranian involvement is confirmed, Tehran likely did not rely on criminal proxies, a departure from tactics used in previous incidents, suggesting a more direct level of state participation. When asked about the potential Iranian link, UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting declined to speculate, stating it would be unwise to do so at this time.

The security alert occurs against a backdrop of strained diplomatic relations between Washington and Tehran. Recent negotiations appeared to reach an impasse over the weekend after President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s conditional proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. However, Trump later told Axios that he anticipates further talks with Iranian negotiators during the current week.

Following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision to reverse his initial refusal to allow U.S. forces to use British bases for defensive strikes against Iranian missile sites, various American aircraft, including B-52 and B-1 bombers, have been observed at RAF Fairford.
