Lisa Nandy, the UK’s Culture Secretary, has issued a stark warning to technology companies that the government’s efforts to enhance online safety are far from complete. She described the recent decision to prohibit children under the age of 16 from using social media platforms merely as a “staging post” in a broader campaign to regulate the digital landscape.
Earlier this year, the government revealed plans to ban teenagers under 16 from accessing what are classified as “high-risk” social media applications. Simultaneously, safer platforms will face new restrictions aimed at protecting young users.
Nandy emphasized that the United Kingdom intends to continue cracking down on unsafe online practices, positioning the nation as a “pioneer of tech as a force for good.” The statement signals that further legislative measures are likely to follow as the government seeks to establish rigorous standards for digital platforms operating within the country.
