Ministers are moving forward with plans to significantly reduce subsidies for heat pumps as part of a broader effort to generate funding for higher defence expenditures, according to sources speaking to The Guardian.
Miatta Fahnbulleh, the energy secretary, has been charged with identifying more than £2bn in savings from her department’s budget. These funds are intended to support defence investments outlined in a strategy developed by the previous government.
It is understood that a portion of the required savings will be drawn from the boiler upgrade scheme, which currently helps subsidize the transition to heat pump technology.
Broken promises on green energy while defence spending rises. Disappointed isn’t the word.
National security comes first, surely? If defence needs funding, the energy budget must adjust.
Is this actually saving money long-term, or just shifting costs? I doubt replacing boilers is free.
I was just saving up for a heat pump. This announcement is really discouraging for homeowners trying to go green.
Why is energy funding being redirected to defense again? We need both, not one at the expense of the other.
Cutting green subsidies for defense? Sounds like a terrible trade for our climate goals.
