The UK government has confirmed plans for a new fleet of battery-powered trains aimed at improving travel times and reliability across the north of England. Announced by No 10, the initiative is expected to deliver faster journeys for commuters and passengers in the region.
The 29 new trains will be operated by TransPennine Express and manufactured at Alstom’s Litchurch Lane facility in Derby, with production scheduled to begin in 2028. According to the government, the project will create approximately 350 local jobs in Derby and support nearly 6,000 positions nationwide.
Glad to see manufacturing return to Derby. Battery tech is the right move for non-electrified lines. About time.
