Uganda has officially rescinded its plan to withdraw from the Invictus Games, reversing a surprise announcement made last week. The decision was reinstated after the country’s military leadership received direct reassurance from King Charles regarding the nation’s participation.
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the eldest son of President Yoweri Museveni and a key military figure in Uganda, had initially declared the country’s absence. He shared the announcement on the social media platform X, stating that his motivation stemmed from a deep respect for the King. However, he cited ongoing tensions related to what he described as “Harry-Meghan nonsense” as a significant factor in the original withdrawal.
The pivot came after the Royal Palace clarified that there were no issues with Uganda taking part in the event. Following this confirmation, General Kainerugaba announced that the country would proceed with its participation in the games hosted by the Duke of Sussex.
