Aleksander Ceferin, the president of UEFA, has launched a sharp critique against his counterpart at FIFA, Gianni Infantino, targeting the failed Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative and other contemporary controversies. In a forceful address, Ceferin declared that it is “time to say enough” regarding FIFA’s direction and remarked that “the emperor is naked,” signaling a demand for significant leadership changes.
Speaking at the European Football Clubs (EFC) general assembly, Ceferin did not explicitly name Infantino. However, his comments made his stance on the need for new FIFA leadership unmistakably clear. Leveraging the setting of Copenhagen, he drew a parallel to Hans Christian Andersen’s famous tale, “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” to characterize Infantino’s conduct.
The UEFA chief referenced several recent developments to bolster his argument, including the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Donald Trump and the controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun from the previous summer. He also highlighted the shortcomings of the FFE scheme as evidence of the current administration’s failures.
