The United Arab Emirates has suspended all air services operated by Iranian carriers, becoming the latest nation to align with American sanctions designed to cripple Iran’s aviation industry. A statement released Thursday by the Emirates News Agency reported that the General Civil Aviation Authority made the decision due to US restrictions that effectively bar Iranian airlines from accessing airports globally.
This move places the UAE alongside Oman, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkmenistan, which have all restricted or suspended access for Iranian flights following the threat of new US penalties. Dubai serves as a critical hub for Iranian carriers, hosting multiple daily flights and maintaining strong commercial ties with a large Iranian diaspora.
The enforcement of these sanctions has already caused immediate disruptions. According to the AFP news agency, a flight operated by Iran Airtour traveling from Tehran to Dubai was canceled shortly before its scheduled departure on Thursday, despite tickets having been previously issued.
The diplomatic and economic rift between the two nations has widened recently. The UAE, which endured Iranian missile and drone attacks during the recent US-Israel conflict with Iran, ceased trade and financial exchanges with Tehran last month. Additionally, on Wednesday, the UAE’s central bank froze transactions involving Iran’s Bank Melli, citing violations related to money laundering, terrorism financing, and arms proliferation.
Earlier this month, the US Treasury Department introduced comprehensive sanctions against Iran’s aviation sector, targeting 27 airlines and numerous supporting companies. Washington warned that any airport or corporation continuing to service Iranian carriers risks exclusion from the US dollar system.
In response to the growing isolation, Majid Akhavan, a spokesman for Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization, stated that diplomatic and aviation negotiations are ongoing to lift the restrictions and resume flights to the UAE. He also confirmed that Turkmenistan forced an Iranian flight bound for Dushanbe to return to Tehran after refusing permission for the aircraft to traverse its airspace.
While major routes have been severed, several smaller Iranian airlines continue to operate services to China and Armenia, countries that have resisted US pressure, as well as select routes to Turkiye.
The timing is interesting given the recent missile attacks. The UAE is clearly choosing economic survival over regional solidarity.
