The United Arab Emirates prosecutor general has stated that the co-pilot of flydubai flight FZ1073 attempted to carry out a “terrorist attack” while airborne on Wednesday, according to state media reports released on Saturday.
Prosecutor General Ahmed bin Abdulla al-Raisi said the suspect tried to seize control of the aircraft bound for Israel. During the incident, the co-pilot reportedly used a crash axe to attack the captain. Passengers and crew members intervened to subdue the suspect and stabilize the plane, preventing a potential catastrophe.
Officials noted that the co-pilot’s actions nearly caused the flight, which had 182 people on board, to crash after sending it into a sharp plunge.
Al-Raisi further revealed that the suspect had previously been barred from flying in Oman due to extremist views.
